The mobile application for the communication between BAföG and AFBG applicants__

Individual development and the cloud backend of Almato enable, on behalf of DATAGROUP IT Solutions, the fast and easy provision of mobile processes for the state of Hesse and subsequently for the states of Bavaria, Brandenburg and Bremen.

BAföG offers financial support to promote training. For more than 40 years, this support has been helping schoolchildren, students and career starters to finance their training and thus successfully launch their careers. The aim of BAföG is to provide more support for many young people. To this end, the states of Bavaria, Brandenburg and Hessen want to make communication with applicants as uncomplicated and fast as possible.

This project has been hampered by the previous predominantly analogue processes. The necessary documents for the BAföG application could be submitted either by post or as PDF files, while updates on the processing status were always sent by post. The state of Hesse needed a way to strengthen its digital presence, increase the user experience and facilitate communication.


The individual development in combination with the backend of Almato (ONE_Mobile-Backend-as-a-Service) made it possible for Hesse to be the first federal state to make services related to the application process mobile. The states of Bavaria and Brandenburg were added in quick succession. During implementation, a strong focus was placed on data protection to ensure the security of personal data.

Thanks to standard functions, such as data storage and user administration from the cloud backend, the app project was implemented within only twelve weeks and with significant cost savings.

“BAföGdirekt” was developed as a native app for Android and iOS and optimized for smartphones and tablets. The states of Bavaria, Brandenburg and Hesse now use “BAföGdirekt” as a mobile supplement to the DATAGROUP’s BAFSYS system, with which around 40 % of all student BAföG applications are processed throughout Germany.

Applicants can quickly and easily select their office, upload documents and receive current status updates on their application via push notification – a standard function of the ONE_Mobile-Backend-as-a-Service.
